Let me know if you have any questions, I've been using DeepFreeze for so long I've gotten to know all of its quirks. I set the machines to thaw the last Sunday of each month from 1PM to 8PM and just let MSE have at it. I also have MSE set to autorun a full scan once a month. I also HIGHLY recommend you disable the user keyboard / mouse input so no one can mess with the machines while they are thawed.

I use Ninite Enterprise to update all the common stuff. During this time period, you can also set other software to auto-update if you like.

Have it reboot into a frozen configuration at 11PM sunday night so it is ready to go for the next morning. During that time frame, 11PM to 11AM - just set the machine to auto-thaw. Set MSE to run updates Saturday 11PM to Sunday 11AM - THIS isn't required really as Windows Updates will ALSO cover MSE updates, but I like to have it just incase. Symantec and other such AVs are unnecessarily expensive on machines that revert to their original state at the end of the day anyway. Second, I HIGHLY recommend Microsoft Security Essentials as your AV. If it doesn't get them all, it'll pull them next week. That usually gives it enough time to get most critical updates, including necessary restarts, etc. You don't need to set it to thaw or anything special, just set the Windows Updates to run from 7PM Friday to 7PM Saturday for example. You can also set Deep Freeze to restart after each user logs out, but that may not work for you.įriday, after school ends and everyone leaves, start Win Updates. In the DeepFreeze configuration administrator, you can set DeepFreeze to read from a WSUS server or just run WinUpdates itself.Įveryday at Midnight or (XYZ time) set the machine to reboot so the next morning you get a fresh start. This is critical, DeepFreeze has a bug where it will occasionally go into a reboot loop if the machine tries to update itself (even if DeepFreeze is set to thaw) and there is no quick fix. You can have it point to any machine, even over WAN as long as you open the necessary ports.ĭISABLE Windows Update on EVERY machine.

Create a DeepFreeze install file from the console and make sure ALL machines in the LAN point to the console IP address. Big fan of deep freeze and have used it in an environment like yours many times, my suggestions:Īssuming you have DeepFreeze Enterprise (you should, it's worth it) install the console on one of the IT administrators machines.
